Cultivate the future of farming with technology – Learn Agricultural Engineering now at RCET

The department of Agricultural Engineering at Rohini College of Engineering and Technology, Kanyakumari, started in 2021. This is one of the innovative departments of RCET with the vision to inculcate competency in the field of Agricultural Engineering in rural regime by promoting science based agricultural practices for the betterment of the society.

The department has a farm of 6 acres of land, as well as well-equipped soil science and meteorological facilities with highly competent teaching faculty, to impart information on crop cultivation issues from seed to harvest. The Food and Agricultural Processing Laboratory has undergone a complete modernization by the Department. The department provides first-year students with practical instruction in the most recent agricultural engineering technologies. The department offers outcome-based instruction, which supports students’ learning, growth, and service to society.

Association Activities of Agricultural Engineering Department

1. SPECTRA 22

Rohini Association of Agricultural Engineers (RAAE) was inaugurated on 14.09.2022. Association conducted SPECTRA 22 on same date with Dr. Jebamalai Vinanchiyarachi, Former principal advisor to the director general of UNIDO as the chief guest. Chief guest gave a talk on “Fostering agribusiness for India’s prosperity”. His presentation was about contribution of agricultural sector towards GDP. He also stressed the importance of adding value to agricultural products.

2. Industrial Visit to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore

Students from RCET toured the labs for post-harvest technology, food processing, renewable energy, and agricultural machinery during this industrial visit to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. Additionally, the students went to the Orchard of Horticulture, where they learned about the nature of fruit and vegetable crops and production techniques including grafting. Faculty members from the farm machinery laboratory described the many cultivators and ploughs that have been employed in agricultural operations.

3. Hands-on Training of Crop Production in connection with World Student’s Day

The training took place at the Rohini College of Engineering and Technology’s Agro Farm. Field preparation was done before drip pipe installation. After that, each student planted seeds or saplings in their own patch. In their individual fields, various crops including groundnut, lady’s finger, cluster bean, radish, tomato, brinjal, and chilli were sown and watered.
