In a significant demonstration titled 'Save Democracy,' leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, including Sharad Pawar, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury, and others, gathered at Jantar Mantar on Friday. The protest aimed to voice opposition against the suspension of 146 MPs from the recently adjourned Winter Session of Parliament.
Sharad Pawar emphasized the opposition's readiness to pay any price to safeguard democracy. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, part of the protest, stressed that the suspension of 146 MPs was unprecedented in global democratic history, signaling danger to democracy. He urged people to bring the INDIA Alliance into power for a better future.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed concern over the government's refusal to address opposition requests, leading to the suspension and the hurried passage of consequential laws. He criticized the government's desire for a Parliament resembling those in China or North Korea, calling it a betrayal of faith in the parliamentary system.
Congress MP Manish Tewari called for nationalist organizations to unite in a collective voice to save democracy. The suspended MPs, present at the protest, highlighted their grievances. A nationwide protest was scheduled at all district headquarters by the Congress party.
The 146 MPs were suspended for disrupting proceedings and demanding a statement from Union Minister Amit Shah about the Parliament security breach. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed disappointment over the lost hours and criticized the weaponization of disruptions as a political strategy. The suspended MPs conducted a march from the Parliament building to Vijay Chowk to protest the mass suspension of opposition lawmakers.
