The vandalism reportedly involved graffiti on the plinth of the statue, with images circulating on social media. HT.com could not independently verify the authenticity of the photographs.

In response, the Indian High Commission in London described the act as a “violent attack on the idea of nonviolence”. The commission stated that it has approached local authorities and is coordinating efforts to restore the statue to its original dignity.

Official Statement

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the High Commission said:

“@HCI_London is deeply saddened and strongly condemns the shameful act of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square. This is not just vandalism, but a violent attack on the idea of nonviolence, three days before the international day of nonviolence, and on the legacy of the Mahatma.”

The post also confirmed that teams from the High Commission are on site, working with authorities for immediate restoration of the statue. Local authorities have assured that they are investigating the incident.

About the Statue

The bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Tavistock Square was unveiled in 1968 with the support of the India League. The plinth bears the inscription:

“Mahatma Gandhi, 1869-1948”

The statue holds historical significance, as Mahatma Gandhi studied law at nearby University College London. Each year, Gandhi Jayanti is marked at the site with floral tributes and remembrance ceremonies, honoring his principles of peace and nonviolence.
